the challenge    A new film production company was being created to target the burgeoning market for reasonably budgeted horror movies and thrillers. The founders included horror movie director Kevin Lane, noted film producer Lindsay Lanzillotta, and legendary cinematographer Dean Cundey.

the solution    I began by vetting candidates for the company’s name. The winner is a famous coinage from H.P. Lovecraft’s short story “The Lurking Fear.”  In designing the logo, I paid homage to graphics from cult B-movies of the late ‘80s and ‘90s. The identity colour hovers between blood and Burgundy wine. In design work ranging from their stationery through their website to a variety of marketing materials, I utilized contemporary elements as diverse as currently fashionable Victorian wallpaper patterns and X-rays. Of the marketing copy I wrote for Thunder Crazed, I’m particularly fond of the company tagline: “Creators of films that explore darkness.”
